The Characters

  • Unteroffizier Jens Artur, 24

After spending two years clawing at the Red Army on the Russian front, 24-year-old Artur has yet to be impressed by anything the Americans throw at him in this Mediterranean paradise. The flames, the cold, the cries of the Russian front are far away now but they are engraved in him - they are all he thinks about.

  • Unterfeldwebel Walter Brander, 53

Brander is an ancient veteran in the German Army; a relic dug up from the apocalyptic trenches of 1918. He is the “old man” in the squad, a father figure to his grenadiers. Herr Brander is a skilled combat leader, but he is long past his prime and would rather retire in peace. He is only 53 years old, but his leathery skin and permanent squint would have you believe he is much older.

  • Panzergrenadier Freder Halbrock, 15

“Blute und Ehre!” was engraved on the minds of his generation. Born during the genesis of the Third Reich, Halbrock grew up a Hitler Youth. Now that the Fatherland requires fighters on the frontlines, Halbrock is learning there is more to war than is printed on a propaganda poster.

  • Panzergrenadier Oliver Bolek, 25

The Americans have a Pole in their squad, and so do the Germans. Bolek was in the Polish Cavalry during the fall of Poland in 1939. With his home and military destroyed, he chose to stay alive and agreed to fight for Germany. Now serving in the army that he tried to stop from invading his country, Bolek will continue to do whatever he can to stay alive.

  • Unteroffizier Ewald, 27

His commanding presence, powerful stride, and threatening glare make Ewald a leader to be feared. Ewald does not have any patience for the young soldiers in his charge.

  • Panzergrenadier Hans Koster, 16

Knowing only what he saw in newsreels, Koster has underestimated the war, and he soon realizes he might be the wrong kid for the job.

  • Panzergrenadier Johann Tauber, 17

Enthusiastic, optimistic, and cocky, the war for young Tauber is a big summer camp. He is the oldest of the teenage soldiers and not sure where he fits among his squad.

  • Panzergrenadier Klaus Mueller, 16

Like many teenage Germans processed in the Third Reich’s war machine, young Mueller is eager to fire his rifle and pin badges to his jacket. For him, the frontline is an endless adventure that awaits.

  • Panzergrenadier Richter, 20

While Richter is relatively young, his face shows experience. He is a quiet character who follows orders and is quick to be by Ewald’s side to get the job done. Richter is a solid soldier with a menancing look.

  • Sarge, 20

“Sarge” is the youngest and most inexperienced in this squad of veterans. He may be young and small, but he is trying his hardest to shake off his insecurity and be a leader of men. Once he is forced into a complex situation, he questions whether or not he really wants to be “the Sarge.”

  • Pvt. Carlis Rowe, 23

Some men cannot grasp the idea that war means “kill or be killed.” This tobacco-chewing roughneck has trained himself to feel no qualms, no pride, no remorse when it comes to killing. The sooner the better, the shorter the easier.

  • PFC Martin "Leo" Kelley, 29

When he is not fighting, Leo loves the simple pleasures in life: women, booze and smokes. When he is fighting, he keeps up morale with his Irish wit. An old man at 29, Leo left his native New England for some adventure and hopes to get his hands on more wine and women.

  • Pvt. Lattie Tipton, 32

Back home, Lattie could barely hold a job to support his estranged wife and little girl. In war, he is a fierce warrior when necessary. Lattie knows only toil and hardship, suffering from one spot in life to the next. He doesn’t even like to see the enemy suffer.

  • Pvt. Joe Sieja, 31

For Joe, this is a personal war. Even though he was already 30-years-old, Joe left the Polish Hegewisch community in Chicago, Illinois to get revenge on the krauts for overthrowing his homeland. He brands all Germans as simply “sonsabitches” as he kills them, and collects as many war trophies as he can carry.

  • Pvt. James Fife, 30

Fife is a Native American from Seminole, Oklahoma. He is a quiet man, unfazed by the war. Cigarettes are his main coping mechanism. He won’t let his men down when all hell breaks loose.

  • Pvt. Vert Enis, 20

Enis is trying his best to stay alive, even though he seems to always be tasked with the most dangerous jobs. He is a good private and follows orders as he hides his fear.
